Standing Up to Pee

The Fundamentals of Caring is a movie that tells the story of a caregiver, Ben, providing for 18 year old Trevor, who has muscular dystrophy. In the beginning of the movie, Ben goes through a training process in order to become a caregiver. The movie also reveals that Ben has his own set of problems he is dealing with. I initially chose this movie because one of the reviews on the resource page stated that the movie revealed something real about the interaction between a caregiver and the individual receiving the care. I thought this to be relational because occupational therapist are caregivers, we literally teach the individual and people around the individual how to provide care. This movie revealed something raw about this relationship. Most would be intimidated by the language and dry humor associated with Trevor, however Ben did not back down. I think this movie shows the importance of building a relationship with a client and what a motivator that is for people. Here is Trevor, and 18 year old boy who has never been on a date, never kissed a girl, and only knows about the world around him through what he sees through the box in his living room. He desires to go to the places that he sees, and on the surface, it seems for shallow reasons. As the movie progresses, it isn't hard to see that Trevor may have been a little intimidated by the world he thought he could have confidence in. Regardless of his uneasiness, Ben is there encouraging at the side of Trevor from getting out of his normal routine around the house to taking a girl on a date at the diner across the street. Another important aspect in Ben's character is that he never forgets to inform people that Trevor is a human, not a muscular dystrophy kid who is helpless. Perhaps the most engaging situation throughout the whole movie is when Ben asks Trevor what he desires most, Trevor response that he desires to stand up to pee. In the midst of all of the traveling, and all of the sly remarks about sex that Trevor makes, if he did not have muscular dystrophy, he would most enjoy standing up to pee. As an occupational therapy student, and being in settings that I can't necessarily take someone on a road trip across the United States, I must remember that the things that seem insignificant to individuals without disability, are important to those who no longer have them. And finally, I would like to commend Ben on his adaptability at the end of the movie. Using a stretcher to modify the environment to allow Trevor to stand up and pee screams occupational therapy. "If you can't adapt as an occupational therapist, you will become extinct.", Stephanie Lancaster. I think in order to remind people that individuals are human and not reduced to what their disability limits them to be, this movie is a must-see, especially for those in the field of occupational therapy.
